Travel Time Calculator

The calculator estimates how long a trip takes: it divides distance by average speed, adds the time spent at stops and shows the arrival time from a chosen departure.

The formula is the easy part. The honest average speed is what matters, and it is almost always lower than the number on the signs — which is exactly why journeys overrun.

Arrival time

Formula: time = distance ÷ average speed

Average speed is lower than the limit: towns, traffic lights, overtaking and climbs eat into it. Use 80–90 km/h for motorways and 60–70 km/h for mixed routes.

Formula and example

  • Travel time = distance ÷ average speed.
  • 450 km at an average of 80 km/h takes 5 hours 38 minutes.
  • With a 30-minute stop the trip takes 6 hours 8 minutes.
  • Leaving at 08:00 means arriving at 14:08.

Choosing an average speed

Average speed absorbs everything that happens between start and finish: towns, traffic lights, overtaking, climbs, roadworks. On a motorway limited to 110 km/h the real average rarely beats 90 km/h.

Working figures: 80–90 km/h for motorway running, 60–70 km/h for a mixed route through villages, 40–50 km/h through built-up areas and 20–30 km/h for city traffic at rush hour.

What to add to the estimate

  • Fuel and coffee stops run 10–15 minutes each; a proper meal is 40–60 minutes.
  • On long drives a safe rhythm is a 15-minute break every two hours.
  • Congestion on the approach to a large city easily adds an hour.
  • In winter or heavy rain, drop the average speed by 10–15 km/h.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate travel time?

Divide the distance by your average speed and add the time spent at stops. 450 km at 80 km/h is 5 hours 38 minutes of driving.

What average speed should I use on a motorway?

For motorway running without towns, 80–90 km/h is realistic; a mixed route works out at 60–70 km/h.

Why does my navigation app show a different time?

Navigation knows the road profile and live traffic, while this calculation uses a single average speed. It is a planning tool, not a live forecast.

Does the calculator use maps or traffic data?

No. It works with the distance you enter and never calls a routing service.

How do I plan an overnight stop?

Estimate each day separately: 600–800 km is a comfortable day, beyond which fatigue builds and the average speed falls.
