Speed, distance and time calculator

This calculator links three values: speed, time and distance. Choose what you need, enter the two you know, and the third one is calculated for you.

Speed comes out in km/h, m/s and mph, while travel time is shown in hours and minutes the way a navigation app reports it.

Result

90 km/h

25 m/s · 55.92 mph

The three formulas

  • Speed = distance ÷ time. 120 km in 1 hour 20 minutes is 90 km/h.
  • Distance = speed × time. 90 km/h for 2.5 hours covers 225 km.
  • Time = distance ÷ speed. 300 km at 100 km/h takes 3 hours.
  • To get m/s, divide km/h by 3.6. 90 km/h equals 25 m/s.

What average speed really means

Average speed is the whole distance divided by the whole elapsed time, stops included. It is almost always lower than the number on the speedometer while moving.

That is why a 500 km drive at a 90 km/h limit takes more than 5.5 hours in practice: fuel stops, traffic and rest breaks all count.

Where the calculation is used

  • Trip planning: when to leave in order to arrive on time.
  • Checking whether a schedule is realistic for the route.
  • Sport: average speed on a bike, in the pool or on skis.
  • School motion problems, which use exactly these three formulas.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate average speed?

Divide the distance travelled by the time it took. 240 km in 3 hours is 80 km/h.

How do I find travel time from distance and speed?

Divide distance by speed. 450 km at 90 km/h takes 5 hours.

How do I convert km/h to m/s?

Divide by 3.6. For example, 72 km/h equals 20 m/s.

Does it include stops?

Only if you add them to the total time. Then the result is the average speed including breaks.

Why does my navigation app show a different time?

It accounts for traffic, speed limits per segment and terrain. This calculator uses one constant average speed.
