Running pace calculator

This pace calculator turns a distance and a finish time into pace: minutes per kilometre and minutes per mile, plus average speed in km/h and mph.

The split table shows what that pace means for 5K, 10K, a half marathon and a marathon.

How pace is calculated

Pace is time divided by distance. Speed is the inverse: distance divided by time. Both describe the same run from opposite directions.

  • Pace (min/km) = total minutes ÷ distance in kilometres.
  • 10 km in 55 minutes: 55 ÷ 10 = 5.5 min/km, that is 5:30 per kilometre.
  • Speed (km/h) = distance ÷ time in hours. The same run is 10.9 km/h.
  • Pace per mile comes from multiplying pace per kilometre by 1.609.

Why runners track pace

  • To spread effort across a long race instead of burning out in the first kilometres.
  • To work backwards from a goal finish time to the pace it requires.
  • To compare workouts run over different distances.
  • To keep easy runs genuinely easy and separate from race pace.

Half marathon and marathon distances

A half marathon is 21.0975 km and a marathon is 42.195 km. The split table uses those exact distances, so the projections match official races rather than rounded 21 and 42 km figures.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate running pace?

Divide total minutes by the distance in kilometres. 45 minutes over 9 km gives a pace of 5:00 min/km.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time per distance in min/km, speed is distance per hour in km/h. A lower pace number means a higher speed.

What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?

Around 5:41 min/km, or roughly 9:09 min/mile: 240 minutes divided by 42.195 km.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace per kilometre by 1.609. A 5:00 min/km pace is about 8:03 min/mile.

Does it account for hills or wind?

No. It reports average pace from distance and time. Terrain, heat and wind will change your real splits.
