Liters and cubic metric units

  • 1 liter = 1,000 milliliters = 1,000 cubic centimeters.
  • 1 milliliter is exactly the same volume as 1 cm³.
  • 1 cubic meter = 1,000 liters; multiply m³ by 1,000 to get liters.
  • 0.5 liter = 500 mL, while 250 mL = 0.25 liter.

Liters to gallons

The US liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, or 3.785411784 liters. Divide liters by 3.785411784 to get US gallons; 20 liters is about 5.283 US gallons.

The imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters and must not be treated as the US unit. One imperial gallon is about 1.201 US gallons.

Cups, ounces, pints, and quarts

A US gallon contains 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups, or 128 US fluid ounces. Thus one US cup is exactly 8 US fluid ounces and 236.5882365 milliliters.

A fluid ounce measures volume; an ounce without the word fluid usually measures mass. Converting recipe quantities from mass to volume also requires ingredient density, which this unit converter does not assume.

Cubic feet and cubic dimensions

A cubic foot is the volume of a cube one foot on each side: exactly 1,728 cubic inches and 0.028316846592 cubic meters. A cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.

If you have three dimensions rather than a volume, multiply length × width × height first, keeping every dimension in the same unit, then convert the resulting cubic unit.

Frequently asked questions

How many milliliters are in a liter?

Exactly 1,000. Multiply liters by 1,000 to convert them to milliliters.

How many liters are in a US gallon?

Exactly 3.785411784 liters. An imperial gallon is different and equals 4.54609 liters.

How many ounces are in a cup?

One US customary cup contains exactly 8 US fluid ounces. This is a volume relationship, not a mass conversion.

How many liters are in a cubic foot?

One cubic foot equals exactly 28.316846592 liters.

Is one milliliter the same as one cubic centimeter?

Yes. 1 mL and 1 cm³ are exactly equal volumes.
