Two families of prefixes
Decimal prefixes step by 1000: a kilobyte is a thousand bytes, a megabyte a million, a gigabyte a billion. Drive manufacturers and internet providers use these.
Binary prefixes step by 1024: kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte. Operating systems count this way, even though Windows and many applications still label the result KB, MB and GB.
Where the "missing" space goes
- 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes by the manufacturer's specification.
- The system divides that by 1024 three times and reports 931.3 GiB.
- The gap is about 7% at terabyte scale and grows with capacity.
- The file system takes a further slice: its bookkeeping structures are not available for your data.

Bits and bytes in connection speed
There are eight bits in a byte. Providers quote link speed in megabits per second while browsers report downloads in megabytes per second, which is where the factor of eight comes from.
A 100 Mbit/s plan delivers about 12.5 MB/s at best. A 1 GB file therefore takes roughly 80 seconds, not 10.

Why does a 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
