How the scales differ
Celsius is anchored to water: 0 degrees at freezing and 100 at boiling under normal pressure. Fahrenheit splits the same span into 180 parts, so one Fahrenheit degree is smaller.
Kelvin is an absolute scale: zero sits at the lowest possible temperature, −273.15 °C. A kelvin is the same size as a Celsius degree, so converting is only a 273.15 shift.
Mental shortcuts
- Celsius to Fahrenheit, roughly: double it and add 30. 20 °C gives 70 °F instead of the exact 68 °F.
- Fahrenheit to Celsius, roughly: subtract 30 and halve it. 70 °F gives 20 °C instead of 21.1 °C.
