Kilometers per hour to meters per second

A kilometre contains 1,000 metres and an hour contains 3,600 seconds. Therefore 1 km/h = 1,000 ÷ 3,600 m/s = 1 ÷ 3.6 m/s. Divide kph by 3.6 to get m/s, or multiply m/s by 3.6 to go back.

  • 54 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 15 m/s.

Knots to MPH and wind speed

A knot is one nautical mile per hour. Because the nautical mile is defined as exactly 1,852 metres, 1 knot = 1.852 km/h = 1,852 ÷ 3,600 m/s. Knots are widely used for marine and air navigation and in some weather reports.

Wind speed uses the same m/s, km/h, mph and knot conversions as any other physical speed. The Beaufort scale is not a linear speed unit, so it is not included in the converter.

Speed conversion formula and scope

The general linear formula is v₂ = v₁ × f₁ ÷ f₂. The calculator converts the input to metres per second first and then into the target unit, without rounding the intermediate value.

Speed here means distance travelled per unit of time. Internet and data rates use bits per second, interface speed can involve signalling and protocol overhead, and changing audio playback speed is a media-processing task. Those quantities are not interchangeable with km/h or mph.

Running pace is the reciprocal form of speed: it records time per distance. At 12 km/h, for example, pace is 60 ÷ 12 = 5 min/km, a task handled more directly by a running pace calculator.
