The formula
- Tip = bill × percent ÷ 100.
- Total = bill + tip.
- Share = total ÷ number of people.

When splitting evenly is unfair
An even split works when everyone ordered roughly the same. If one person had tea and another had steak and wine, itemising is fairer: each pays for their own dishes while shared starters and the tip are divided equally.
A middle ground is to split within groups — everyone who drank alcohol shares the bar part of the bill separately from the food.

Before you pay
